Order Yourself a Good Day
ByBy Ann Yaggie, Certified Professional Coach and Executive Consultant
I met over coffee and breakfast recently for some strategic planning and social media mapping at the Good Day Café in Golden Valley. While we caught up on life and business, we perused our menus and debated just what would hit the spot. I ordered granola (absolutely delicious) while McKenzie, my social media gal, opted for what the restaurant appropriately named the “Good Day Breakfast”. As we shared our selections, it dawned on us both like a bolt of lightning that we had stumbled upon one of the most amazing get-happy tools known to human kind: the power of perception. As McKenzie announced, “I think I’ll have a good day today,” my first reaction was to say, “Wouldn’t it be nice if it were so easy?”
That morning, however, we both had one of those“Aha!” moments as we realized that, yes, it was that easy! Why did it take a restaurant menu in order for us to realize that the we had the power to make our lives everything we hoped they would be? Was it any harder than ordering a great day for myself?
Admittedly, maintaining a “Good Day Café” disposition isn’t always easy—life throws us curveballs, lemons, three consecutive weeks of rain, and much graver tests. My cheery café epiphany got me to thinking about the nature of happiness, and I realized that a fun challenge, one which would undoubtedly improve my day-to-day life, could be to make sure that I order a good day for myself every day. Why not wake up, get ready, sit down at the table, and no matter what’s actually on the menu, order a great day for myself? People who maintain a positive approach to life, according to statistics, actually live longer, not to mention experience more appreciation and joy.
Therefore, dear readers, my challenge to you is this: When you wake up tomorrow morning and go about your usual routine, make sure you take a moment as you lean over your oatmeal, coffee, or toast to order yourself a good day! I haven’t been disappointed with a meal yet—and neither will you.
Your Take: Is there a routine you have for starting your day with a positive outlook?

I can and have ordered a good day for myself! I don’t have a specific routine, per se, though I find I start the following day with more zest if I do 10-15 minutes yoga and/or stretching before bed. In fact, my night routine has more effect on the following day than anything. Washing my face, stretching, getting to bed on time are quite effective for having a great day.
I love this post, Ann, and must have intuited you writing it. I ordered myself several Good Days recently, and they’ve made all the difference. To have actually ordered them from the Good Day Cafe would have been even more fun!
Chrysta – thanks for your comment – I love experiencing people who have ordered a good day!
Jeri – sounds like ordering a Good Day – and then a Good Day at the Cafe would have been a double! Yum!
